Panel Types
Sound absorption is the ability of a noise panel to internally dissipate (as heat) incident acoustical energy. This properly is measured in terms of a sound absorption coefficient.. The higher the value of the coefficient, the more sound will be "absorbed, " leaving less to be transmitted or reflected. Theoretically, a coefficient value of 1. See #1.

If, for example a construction surface such as concrete was perfectly flat, hard, and non-yielding, then all the acoustic energy (noise) would be reflected and the absorption coefficient would be zero. On the other hand if there was an open window in the structure, the noise would not reflect at all, but would continue in an uninterrupted... See #5.

Block Walls, Concrete Masonry Units, Gilbert, Arizona, AZ
The effectiveness of the absorption method is dependent on the ability of the room surfaces to absorb the noise rather than reflect it. Sound Absorption Coefficient (SAC) is an indication of the sound absorbing efficiency of a surface. The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) is the average SAC taken at our different frequencies. See #6.
