More than 800 exhibitors displayed products and services at this year's AIA (American Institute of Architects) Convention in San Francisco, but it was a particularly special event for Construction Specialties, Inc.

Showcasing its latest development, called Solarmotion, C/S added controllable solar shading systems to its already impressive line of specialty architectural products. Solarmotion sunshades are designed to automatically move with the sun to reduce solar heat gain and glare, lower energy consumption and maximize daylight in buildings.
Construction Specialties has provided the architectural community with fixed sun controls for almost 50 years, but many factors led to the company's decision to enter the controllable shading market.
One of those factors was the USGBC LEED Green Building Rating System. Along with other initiatives like Architecture 2030, LEED considers the use of controllable solar shading systems an effective way of reducing solar heat gains.
As outlined by the USGBC's LEED for New Construction (v.2.2, EA Credit 1) "Automated Moveable Shading Devices" are an effective way of reducing energy consumption. Solarmotion, in its many forms and configurations, meets this requirement.
USGBC also refers to how "Daylight and Views" (Credit 8.1 and 8.2) can be compromised when reducing solar heat gains. The customizable control strategies behind Solarmotion, especially when combined with C/S lightshelves, allow for an optimal daylight management strategy. That is, allowing natural light to enter a building, while minimizing the solar heat gain which can have negative effects on worker productivity and, of course, energy consumption.

Solarmotion was developed to meet these functional needs while at the same time providing the architect with an extensive range of design options. As displayed at the AIA Convention, Solarmotion's louver blades can be designed using aluminum, cedar wood, perforated metal, glass or other materials. Additional color and size options further increase the range of visual possibilities.
"I'm extremely excited to be involved with the launch of such an innovative and promising product like C/S Solarmotion," says Kraig Palmer, Sales Manager for C/S controllable solar shading. "The entire design philosophy behind Solarmotion means we can get creative with materials and technology, while effectively shading buildings and reducing energy consumption. The product is only limited by the imagination of our customers, and the Construction Specialties team is looking forward to working with architects and builders to do what we've always done best, which is to create products that make buildings better. We're always looking for that challenge."
